Just a note that Skip to navigation (or Skip to main content) links are useful not only to the screen reader users but also to those who have to navigate sites using a keyboard. So, by hiding those links you are likely to disadvantage anyone who can't use the mouse since they will have to tab through the navigation. More info at

Is there a benefit to using a div rather than a styled paragraph for these?

Hmmm.. going to have to change my style. I was using .skiplink {display:none}
which I guess is a no-no? Thanks.

My problem with Skip Navigation links is that they show up in search results. I once set up a site with an invisible link to the content and the search result in Google began with *Skip to Content*

I thought you could only link to an anchor like so:

.

However, linking to a div with id="content" (not name="content") seems to work.

Its all very well having a link that skips the navigation but it doesn't actually work.
